A British multinational oil and gas company, asked CorrosionRADAR to support with their semi-buried butane tank inspections.
Maintenance and Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) checks were difficult, time consuming and expensive, and prior to using CR:LR’s solution our customer was required to remove 42 movable metallic heat shields, that
protected the tank, before they could carry out their assessments.
By installing the CUI monitoring solution, the
customer can now carry out inspections without the need to remove each of the heat shields.
They also have the ability to monitor the presence of water behind the heat shields that could lead to future corrosion.
With CorrosionRADAR on board our customer has taken a big step towards enabling predictive maintenance – saving money, time and extending the life of their assets.
Challenge
CorrosionRADAR was asked to support our customer in reducing the cost and complexity involved in inspecting their semi-buried butane tank.
Before CorrosionRADAR’s work, our customer was required to remove 42 movable metallic heat shields, that protected the tank, before they could carry out their inspections. The customer wanted to identify, with ease, any risks of CUI to their asset.
Solution

Baseline for Condition-Led Decisions
Implementation
- CorrosionRADAR’s corrosion and moisture sensor systems were installed. The sensors were deployed around the circumference of the tank, inside the heat shields.
- The arrangement was linear and, to enable placement, the sensors were tied together and fixed to rods. These rods allowed the sensors to pass through the unremoved heat shields and provided mechanical strength for the sensor arrangement.
- The CorrosionRADAR system, with this customer, uses 4G connectivity.
Outcome
- Following the successful installation of the CorrosionRADAR system, our customer can now carry out inspections without the need to remove all the heat shields.
- This moves our customer towards predictive maintenance – saving the company money and personnel time, while extending the life of their asset.
