CR:LR was deployed at a Major Refinery in Europe to proactively manage the significant integrity risks posed by Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) on a column.
Located in a demanding coastal environment, the column was susceptible to moisture ingress, making traditional inspection methods both costly and ineffective. By installing a network of corrosion and moisture sensors, the system delivers a continuous stream of data-driven insights into the CR:CLARITY
dashboard.
The remote monitoring solution identified localised points of moisture ingress, providing the integrity team with the actionable intelligence helping the facility reduce CUI risk, lower maintenance costs, and accelerate its transition towards a predictive maintenance strategy
Challenge
The column presented a maintenance challenge due to its scale and location. Its proximity to the sea and exposure to high winds created an environment that elevated the risk of undetected CUI.
Conventional, calendar-based inspections required extensive scaffolding, resulting in high labour costs and significant operational disruption without guaranteeing the detection of corrosion.
Solution
Analysis Highlighted Moisture Penetration was Occurring in Areas Insulated with Mineral Wool
Implementation
- To provide full visibility of the column’s condition, the system was configured to deploy continuous monitoring through the CR:CLARITY dashboard. This gave the integrity team comprehensive coverage of the most CUI-prone areas, all accessible in one central platform.
- The sensors were deployed in a helical formation around the column, ensuring the asset was completely covered and more accurate prediction of corrosion and moisture build-up.
- Data is transmitted via the site’s LoRa network, enabling CR:CLARITY to provide both alerts of condition changes and long-term trend analysis. expected corrosivity rate.
Outcome
- Shortly after installation, CR:LR detected and pinpointed moisture ingress in localised areas of the column.
- Analysis highlighted a distinct pattern: moisture penetration was occurring in areas insulated with mineral wool.
