Tüpraş deployed a CR:LR predictive monitoring system to address a history of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and reduce risk of incidents on critical pipelines.
The asset’s operational parameters, which involved periodic temperature transitions, created a high-risk sweating service environment, making it highly susceptible to moisture ingress and corrosion. As part of a strategic move towards a Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programme, the site sought a data-driven solution to gain clear insight into this complex CUI damage mechanism.
Challenge
The refinery had encountered several challenges related to CUI on the pipeline, primarily, understanding the nature of the moisture ingress, caused by the asset sweating as it cycled through temperature transitions. This intermittent and unpredictable condition made it difficult to schedule effective inspections, leaving the asset vulnerable to undetected
corrosion.
To support the implementation of a new RBI programme, the integrity team needed precise, continuous data to understand when and where moisture was occurring. The goal was to move beyond reactive repairs and build a predictive model of the asset’s CUI risk profile.
Solution
This continuous data stream is providing the actionable intelligence needed to shape a RBI strategy
Implementation
- The systems were installed along the high-risk sections of the pipeline in
a linear configuration. This ensured the asset was completely covered,
allowing for more accurate visibility of corrosion and moisture build-up. - The installation was carried out using scaffolding, and the asset was
re-insulated with an elastomer rubber foam sheet. The system transmits
continuous data via a 4G cellular connection to a LoRa gateway,
providing the integrity team with immediate alerts and historical trend
analysis on the asset’s condition.
Outcome
- Since its installation, the predictive monitoring system has successfully
captured data over multiple operational cycles. - The data has shown clear indications of moisture presence beneath the
insulation, directly correlating with the pipeline’s temperature
transitions. - This continuous data stream is providing the site with evidence-based
insight into the sweating mechanism that was previously difficult to
observe. - The integrity team now has the actionable intelligence required to shape
its inspection strategy that focuses on future maintenance, and the site
can make informed, data-led decisions to reduce the risk of future
containment breaches and enhance overall safety.
