When dark clouds gather on the horizon, they signal potential risk—but they don’t reveal exactly when or where the storm will hit, or how severe it will be. The same applies to Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) management strategies that rely solely on detecting moisture.
Moisture ingress is an early sign, but how corrosive is that moisture? Detecting moisture alone is not enough to truly assess CUI risk. To help asset owners identify potential risk zones without intrusive inspection, it is essential to monitor the corrosive conditions that moisture creates.
Detecting moisture beneath insulation provides an indication of environmental conditions that could lead to corrosion, but it does not measure the presence, severity, or progression of CUI. Some areas may remain corrosion-free despite moisture ingress.
To move beyond assumptions and make data-driven decisions, asset owners can utilise corrosion sensors to track CUI-specific corrosivity rates.
By utilising corrosion sensors, operators gain access to accurate, asset-specific data that differentiates between potential risk and active corrosion. This approach enables:
The strongest CUI management strategies do not rely on a single data point. While moisture detection provides useful insights, it must be complemented by corrosion monitoring to offer a complete picture of an asset’s CUI risk.
